We are credentialed as an ImPACT Trained Physical Therapist (ITPT).  We are part of a network of specially-trained physical therapists and clinicians who specialize in concussion rehabilitation.

A concussion is a traumatic brain injury caused when the brain is jarred or shook within the skull. They can happen in a variety of settings, most commonly from sports injuries, falls, and auto accidents. Concussions can produce headaches, mood changes, loss of focus, neck pain, nausea, and dizziness. Most people will recover fully with rest and proper treatment. However, physical therapy can help patients who experience these symptoms and speed up their recovery.

Concussion symptoms can last for days, weeks or even months. They will also vary in severity.  Some examples of the different categories of concussion symptoms are:

  • Unable to concentrate
  • Unable to remember new information
  • Feeling “foggy”
  • Feeling slow to process information

  • Sadness
  • Nervousness or anxiety
  • Emotional/mood changes
  • Easily upset
  • Lethargic or fatigued

  • Headache
  • Blurry vision
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Balance problems
  • Light sensitivity
  • Neck pain

  • Sleeping more or less than normal
  • Difficulty falling asleep

Sometimes the first impulse to get as much rest as possible can delay recovery. We are certified in concussion rehabilitation which helps the patient to find the right balance of activity and rest in order to speed recovery.

Physical therapy intervention can include:

  • Balance training
  • Postural education
  • Gaze stabilization exercise/training
  • Manual therapy for neck pain to address soft tissue injury
  • Core strengthening
  • Aerobic conditioning
  • Neuromuscular re-education
  • Home program education
  • Sports conditioning
